PREPARATION IN THE WHITE OUT. MATT TRIPET FROM THE FLY PROGRAM
Over the years I’ve owned multiple versions of Nikon’s 85mm lenses like the 1.4D and 1.4G versions, while both were good at their times, new cameras and sensors push the boundaries of what may be classed as a good lens in the past. They’ve always been a popular portrait lens but I find them equally great as a lifestyle lens, less intimidating compared to a wide-angle as they allow you to move away from the subject yet still capture the scene.
The latest Z version is a new beast, this fast, prime lens provides superb rendering performance and high resolving power throughout the entire range. Wide open its stunningly sharp, stop it down and the detail is superb. If you are shooting in the snow its brilliant as the longer lens hood protects the lens from being snow covered!
The blizzards in the Snowy Mountains on our last trip were quite amazing, minus 4-5-degree temperatures were accentuated by strong winds creating upwards of minus 17 degree wind chill. It didn’t dampen Matts enthusiasm from wanting to get out on the Hobie Compass and have a flick with the flyrod.
